Chat face-to-face conversations
One phone between two people: each speaks their own language and reads the translation.
Chat is a face-to-face conversation on one device. Put one phone between two people. Each speaks their own language and sees the translation right away. Good for front desks, clinics and interviews.
Create a chat link
- In the left menu, click “Chat links”, then “Create link”.
- Enter a “Name”, for example “Front desk (zh/en)”.
- Choose “Language A” (you, lower half of the screen) and “Language B” (the other person, upper half). The two languages cannot share a language family, for example Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
- Click “Create”.
Language A is translated into B, and B into A. Any other language is translated into both. Languages are fixed at creation; create a new link to change them.
Use it on a phone
- On the link’s “Overview”, scan the QR code with the phone, or click “Open on this device”.
- Choose whether the other person sits “Across” or “Beside me”. When across, the upper half turns to face them.
- Tap “Start talking” and just speak.
- To stop for a moment, tap “Pause”, then “Resume”. When you finish, tap “End”.
The phone’s “Settings” let you change the text size, show the other language in small text, show only the top or bottom half, read translations aloud to you or the other person, and set the appearance and interface language.
Link rules
- One link is for one phone at a time. Opening it on another phone stops the first one.
- Links expire after 7 days. Click “Regenerate link” before then.
- The full link is shown only on the computer that created it.
- Revoke link disconnects the device immediately. You can “Restore link” at any time.
Settings, glossaries and transcripts
- “Settings” tab: for example “Read translations aloud”. A device in use picks up changes immediately.
- “Glossaries” tab: add glossaries as for events. See Glossaries.
- “Sessions & transcript” tab: each “Start talking” to “End” is one session. You can download a CSV.
Hours
Chat uses only 1/20 of the hours: 3 minutes per recorded hour. See Top up and how hours work.
